An important town in the County Clare area of south-western Ireland, Shannon has a population of less than 10,000 people. Shannon was built to accommodate the many locals working at the nearby airport and also features a prominent industrial estate. The town of Shannon is situated close to Limerick City, Newmarket-on-Fergus and the county town of Ennis.

On the south-western side of Shannon and close to the coast and Coney Island, Shannon International Airport (SNN) is managed by the Dublin Airport Authority. Serving more than 3.8 million passengers each year, the airport opened in 1942 and has brought the area considerable wealth and prosperity ever since.

Shannon was a planned town and laid out with fast straight roads and organised housing estates. In recent years, much of the town has been revamped and restructured, with more thought to the locals and increasing number of visitors. Traffic around the town has now been reduced, following the new Newmarket-on-Fergus bypass.

Recent improvements have been made to Shannon's shopping centre and general facilities, including the major Skycourt development, which is home to number than 60 different retailers, several supermarkets and a number of popular eateries.
